If you enjoy games that take seconds to learn but a lifetime to master, Abalone hits that sweet spot perfectly. Originally designed back in 1987 by Michel Lalet and Laurent Lévi, it’s an abstract strategy game that strips away luck, dice, and cards. Instead, you're left with a purely tactical, head-to-head battle of positioning.
The setup is elegant: an opponent, a hexagonal board, and contrasting black and white marbles. You control a cluster of 14 marbles, and the objective is simple but aggressive. You need to physically muscle your opponent around the board and shove six of their marbles over the edge. It feels like a mix between sumo wrestling and chess, where maintaining a solid formation is just as important as going on the offensive.
How to Play
The board is a hexagon made up of 61 circular spaces, and whoever plays the black marbles always gets the first move.
On your turn, you can move either one, two, or three of your marbles exactly one space in any of the six available directions. You have flexibility in how they move: you can march them forward or backward in a straight line, or you can slide them sideways as a group to shift your defensive wall.
The core of the game revolves around leverage. You can push your opponent's marbles out of the way (and eventually off the board), but only if you have numerical superiority in a direct, head-on line. It’s all about weight: a line of three of your marbles can push one or two of theirs, and two of yours can push one of theirs.
If you meet an equal force—like three of your marbles facing three of theirs—nobody moves. You'll have to break off, flank them, and find a weaker point in their line to get the push. The first player to knock six enemy marbles off the board takes the win.
Controls
The digital version keeps the tactile feel of the physical board game while making the movement system easy to handle.
- Selecting Pieces: Click or tap on one of your marbles to select it. To move a group, just tap the adjacent marbles of your color to build a straight line of up to three. Selected pieces will highlight in teal.
- Moving: Once you have your marble or line selected, tap any of the highlighted gold spaces to slide your pieces into that spot. You can move them inline or shift the whole group sideways.
- Pushing: When you've lined up a heavier group against a lighter enemy group (like 3 against 2), aim straight at them and tap the red-highlighted front marble of their line to execute the shove.
- Camera & View: Click and drag anywhere on the screen to orbit the board and find the perfect viewing angle. Use your mouse wheel to scroll and zoom, and simply press F to toggle fullscreen mode.
