FreeCell: The Strategic Solitaire Card Game
Welcome to FreeCell, a demanding and highly solvable solitaire card game played using the standard 52-card deck. Unlike the more luck-dependent Klondike Solitaire, FreeCell is almost entirely a game of skill and strategy. Every single card from the deck is visible from the start, demanding that you plan your moves carefully and look ahead to ensure you don't paint yourself into a corner.
This is a one-deck solitaire card game where the setup is crucial to understanding the mechanics. The game board is divided into three main areas: the Tableau, the Free Cells, and the Foundations.
Understanding the Game Layout and Objective
The game begins with all 52 cards being dealt face-up into 8 tableau piles. These are the main working areas where you will manipulate and reorder the cards. Above the tableau, the two critical reserve areas are positioned:
- Four Cells: Located in the top left corner of the screen, these are reserve spaces. These Cells are the lifeline of the game, offering temporary storage for cards that are blocking essential moves on the tableau.
- Four Foundation Piles: Located in the top right hand corner, these are the ultimate destination for every card.
The object of the game is to build up all cards on foundations from Ace to King by following suit. This means the first card placed on a foundation must be an Ace of a specific suit (e.g., Ace of Spades), followed by the 2, 3, 4, and so on, up to the King of that same suit. You win when all 52 cards are moved there, 13 to a pile, successfully completing all four suit sequences.
Rules for Moving and Building Sequences
Successful play depends entirely on mastering the movement rules across the three different zones:
- Tableau Building: The Top cards of tableau piles are available to play. You can build tableau piles down by alternating color. For instance, a Red 8 can be placed on a Black 9, and a Black Queen can be placed on a Red King.
- Cell Usage: The top card of any tableau pile can also be moved to any Cell. Each Cell (or Reserve space) may contain only one card at a time. This constraint makes the cells the most critical strategic resource.
- Foundation Transfers: Cards in the cells can be moved to the foundation piles or back to the tableau piles, if possible. A card can only be moved to a foundation if it correctly follows suit and rank (e.g., a 4 of Hearts onto a 3 of Hearts).
The fundamental rule states that you can move only one card at a time. However, a more advanced rule allows for more complex maneuvers: you can move group of cards in the proper sequence if you have enough free (empty) Cells and/or tableau piles. The maximum size of the sequence you can move is calculated as (N+1) x 2^E, where N is the number of empty tableau piles and E is the number of empty Cells. Mastering this rule is essential for swift and complex stack transfers, turning a long series of single moves into a single, efficient transfer and unlocking your path to victory.
