Driller: The New Fields | Underground Maze Puzzle & Oil Hunt
Take control of a high-powered drill in Driller: Navigate 10 dangerous caverns, collect oil pockets, and protect your drill shaft from underground monsters in this challenging, snake-style puzzle game. Can you master the retraction mechanic or will you sink in Hard Mode?
If you grew up hovering over a keyboard in a dimly lit computer lab, Driller: The New Fields is going to feel like a warm, pixelated hug. It’s a modernized take on the classic "snake-style" maze crawler, but with a mechanical twist that makes it feel much more grounded. Instead of just dodging walls, you’re navigating the claustrophobic pressures of underground caverns, trying to strike it rich without getting your tail bitten off.
How to Play
The core loop is simple but deceptively stressful. You control a high-powered drill head tasked with clearing out 10 distinct underground sectors. Your main objective is to hunt down every last oil pocket hidden within the rock.
The catch? Your drill shaft. As you move, your tail grows behind you, snaking through the tunnels you’ve just carved. This isn’t just a cosmetic trail; it’s your literal lifeline and your biggest weakness. The resident monsters of these caverns aren't interested in your drill head—they want to chew through that vulnerable shaft. You have to weave through the dirt, grab the oil, and keep your "body" from being exposed in open tunnels where enemies prowl. Once the last drop of oil is sucked dry, the path to the next level opens up.
Game Features
This version feels significantly more polished than its predecessors. The physics are snappier, and the "New Fields" graphics give the underground a gritty, industrial atmosphere that actually looks great in a browser.
- Fresh Level Design: 10 levels might sound short, but the layout complexity spikes quickly, forcing you to plan your "dig path" before you commit.
- Difficulty Tiers: You can toggle between three modes. Easy is great for a chill session, but Hard mode is a genuine test of spatial awareness.
- Hidden Secrets: Keep your eyes peeled for a hidden spanner/wrench. It’s a nice nod to the original dev team and adds a bit of "treasure hunter" flavor to the maze-running.
- Enhanced Performance: The movement is fluid, which is vital when you’re trying to make a sharp turn to protect your trailing shaft from an incoming monster.
Scoring
Efficiency is the name of the game here. While you can play it safe and slow, the scoreboard rewards the bold.
- Oil Collection: 10 points per pocket. (Standard, but essential).
- Monster Hunting: 50 points per kill. If you can trap a monster or use the environment to your advantage, it’s a huge boost.
- The Speed Run: You get 10 points for every second you shave off the target time.
- Drill Integrity: You even get 5 points for every meter of your maximum drill length, rewarding those who can manage a massive tail without getting hit.
Game Controls
The layout is intuitive, though the retraction mechanic is where the real strategy lives.
- Movement: Use WASD or the Arrow Keys to navigate the caverns.
- Retract: Hit Space to pull your drill shaft back in quickly. Note that this is disabled in Hard Mode, turning the game into a much more unforgiving puzzle.
- Quit: Press Q if the pressure gets to be too much.
